Are you of legal drinking age in your country of residence?
The Young Viticulturist of the Year Competition provides a fantastic opportunity for viticulturists 30 years or under to upskill, grow in confidence, widen their network and start making a name for themselves within the industry.
The Young Viticulturist of the Year Competition was launched in 2006 and has continued to go from strength to strength, supporting passionate Young Vits under 30 years old as well as building a strong, supportive community comprising of previous contestants, industry members and industry suppliers. The programme consists of Education Days around the country, followed by six regional competitions during June and July, culminating in a national final in August.
The contestants must undergo a mix of practical and theoretical questions which include pruning, netting, machinery, pests and diseases, budgeting, nutrition, wine knowledge, trellising and an interview. They go head to head in the BioStart Hortisports race, a quiz round and also give a speech at the awards dinner. It is a tough but rewarding experience and the winner certainly earns the prestigious title of being The Young Viticulturist of the Year. "Just do it!" is repeated advice from previous contestants, who feel they have grown in confidence, made new contacts, learnt a lot and had a bit of fun along the way.
There are also some amazing prizes to be won at the regional and national competitions. The competition is run entirely on the generosity of sponsors who not only support the competition financially but also with their time and expertise. A huge thank you to all these sponsors. Hear what some of our sponsors recently told us about why they love being a part of the Young Vit community and supporting the next generation of New Zealand's viticulturists, in this VIDEO.
