From the people who make New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
Born in England and raised in Australia, Kevin Judd attended Roseworthy Agricultural College in Adelaide, earning a degree in oenology. After working in New Zealand for three years, in 1984 he met David Hohnen, who wanted Kevin to be his winemaker for a new company being established. That company, was Cloudy Bay, and the rest they say, is history.
Ivan Sutherland is an Olympic medallist and also one of the early pioneers of the Marlborough wine region. He and his wife Margaret purchased their vineyard in the late 1970s as Sauvignon Blanc was being discovered.
Bill and Ross Spence came from generations of winemakers. Wine was part of their early life, and they founded Matua in 1974 with a vision to revolutionise the New Zealand wine industry.
Sophie Parker-Thomson is co-founder and manager of Blank Canvas wines and New Zealand’s newest Master of Wine. In celebration of Sauvignon Blanc Day, we asked her about what opportunities and challenges lie ahead for New Zealand wine and Sauvignon Blanc.
