Discover another side to New Zealand wine! The Matawhero journey started with two New Zealand wine pioneers from the 1960s. Today the story continues around the drive and determination of Kirsten and Richard Searle who purchased the winery in 2008. Their love of the Tairawhiti-Gisborne region runs deep and our vines are the first in the world to greet the new day. Good Spring rainfalls and long dry Summer, combined with both alluvial and heavier clay soils, allow us to dry farm our vineyards. Growing grapes with natural rainfall creates our distinctive fruit-driven wines with weight and intensity.

Experience our rustic charm! Only a 10 minute drive south of Gisborne city on SH1, the Matawhero Cellar Door faithfully portrays the history of our winery. Come and enjoy gourmet platters and wine tasting nestled amongst the vines and olive trees or enjoy a game of petonque. A highlight to our cellar door is to explore the underground cellar which is home to many older vintage Matawhero wines, as well as other iconic New Zealand wine producers.
