The weathered and wild Cape Palliser (or Mātakitaki-a-Kupe). The southernmost point of the North Island, on the remote Wairarapa coast. It’s where the Ruamahanga River, the lifesource of our vineyard land meets the sea, and from where our weather patterns unfurl. From Kupe to Cook, Palliser Bay has long been revered by explorers and pioneers in seeking out a new world. Our name reflects the bold courage and pioneering spirit of those explorers; the connection between the land, river and sea of our small but mighty Martinborough home; and the wild weather that challenges us to craft wines of the most exceptional quality. Our iconic branding echoes this. The Griffin – half eagle, half lion – is a symbol of boldness, intelligence and courage, whose role was guardianship of treasures and priceless possessions. The Maori world view of guardianship, or Kaitiakitanga, being the sustainable protection of the environment, is fundamentally Palliser. All that we do is for for the land, river, and sea of our home to thrive; for kinship between human and nature; and for future generations to prosper.
