Biodiversity in the vineyard relies on ecological chaos, that is a diverse array of habitat at the ground level that provides niches for different beneficial insects that help to control pest species. One example is the diversity of spiders within the vines, that can prey on a variety of insect pests. We have over 20 species that crawl out of the bins when the fruit is picked-all harmless to humans. We do not spray lime sulphur that can harm insect life. When mowing the vineyard rows, we leave an un-mown strip on one side that provides habitat and nectar. The next time we mow, the strip is reversed to the other side. See image.
